Zentral Wellness Is Albuquerque's Go-To Chinese Medicine Clinic

By Pamela Sosnowski

Although acupuncture has existed as a holistic form of medicine for thousands of years, many people won't consider it because they are squeamish about having needles inserted into their body. Dr. Lisabeth Detwiler, one of the co-owners of the Albuquerque-based Chinese medicine clinic Zentral Wellness and a doctor of Oriental medicine, wants people to know that they have nothing to fear.

"Acupuncture isn't scary," she said. "Some people hesitate to try acupuncture because they're afraid of needles. Our needles are as thin as a hair, and most people don't feel them at all. An acupuncture treatment is so relaxing that people often fall asleep."

At Zentral Wellness, acupuncture is used to treat a variety of ailments from physical ones (pain, skin problems, and hormone imbalances to name a few) to emotional ones, such as dealing with grief or depression. Acupuncture is based on the belief that the body contains pathways called meridians, along which energy called Qi (pronounced "chee") flows. When the meridians become blocked it leads to discomfort in the body. Placing acupuncture needles along specific parts of the body can open up and redirect the energy, helping to restore health and wellbeing.

"Acupuncture is well known for treating pain, but honestly, we can work on anything from strengthening your immune system to dealing with the loss of a loved one," explained Detwiler. "Some common things we treat include anxiety, depression, allergies, insomnia, and digestive disorders. The doctors here at Zentral Wellness specialize in dermatology, women's health, and fertility, so we see a lot of eczema, psoriasis, endometriosis, and polycystic ovarian syndrome."

Detwiler and her Zentral team also use massage, herbal medicine, cupping, and other methods of Chinese medicine to treat several health conditions. One of the clinic's specialties is dermatology, where a combination of acupuncture, internal herbal medicine, topical herbal medicine, and nutritional guidance is used to ease skin problems such as acne, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and more. The clinic has its own on-site pharmacy which stocks over 200 herbs that are combined to create treatments.

Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is also administered at the clinic for any number of skin conditions but it also delivers an added benefit: preventing and even reversing aging. With repeated treatments, this facial with needles may help clients experience a reduction in wrinkles, reduced puffiness around eyes, more even skin tone, a general lifted appearance, and more.

Zentral Wellness also offers a weight loss program called the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Method. The program includes weekly one-on-one coaching, personalized steps towards weight loss, and a guide to a diet that is high in lean proteins and low in carbs. Anyone is welcome to attend a free, no obligation introduction to the program throughout the year at the clinic.

The clinic recently relocated into a new, larger space on Morningside Drive. In the past few years it's won Best of the City awards from Albuquerque the Magazine as the city's best alternative wellness practice. All services can be easily booked online.

And as far as those needles go, Detwiler assures clients that her staff will work with them to deliver a comfortable experience.

"We love helping our patients experience better health naturally," she said. "It's so rewarding to help people reduce medications, avoid surgery, and improve their overall quality of life."
