Thornburg Investment Management Offers Paths to Long-Term Financial Health

By Marina I. Jokic

Founded in 1982 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Thornburg serves a broad range of domestic and international clients, and provides active portfolio management services geared for long-term financial health. Unlike many other firms, Thornburg has rooted its investment practices in its core competencies, and shied away from expanding their rosters at a rapid clip.

Being an employee-owned company, Thornburg has thrived under an independent, private ownership structure. The advantage of not being beholden to providing short-term results to a corporate owner allows Thornburg to focus on creating healthy investment returns with a look to the future.

Shawn Lee, director of human resources, is proud of the work ethic at the core of Thornburg's investment strategy.

"Our goal is to be a trusted partner for our clients and a respected leader in global asset management," he said. "We believe that we can add value for our clients by how we do our job, not just by what we do."

The company's focus on long-term financial health for their clients has helped cement its reputation as a trusted leader in asset management. Adhering to their values and principles has helped build up their reputation. For instance, investing according to the fundamental value of an issuer, making decisions for the long-term, and managing risk by holding a limited number of positions and knowing them well have helped Thornburg at responsibly managing assets. In addition, Thornburg promotes collaboration across strategies and asset classes by teaching its analysts to understand and communicate bottom-up fundamentals across industries, sectors, and borders.

One investment management headquarters located at the southern tip of the Rocky Mountains in Santa Fe distances Thornburg from the noise and "groupthink" of the major financial institutions. Its location, together with its investment philosophy, helps the company to form an independent perspective of portfolio management.

"There is no investment approach that fits all," Lee said.

Thornburg's first investment product, the Daily Tax Free Income Fund, was introduced in 1982. Over the course of the next eight years, the company rolled out a series of conservatively managed, laddered fixed-income strategies, launching its first U.S. equity strategy in 1995 and its first global equity in 1998. Today, Thornburg's investment capabilities are vast compared to its humble beginnings.

"Giving back to the community is an important part of Thornburg's culture and values," Lee said.

The company partners with various nonprofits to encourage their employees to volunteer in the community. Thornburg also has a LEED Gold certified campus, which combines state-of-the-art environmental technologies and design to create a beautiful and efficient workplace.
