The Tennis Club of Albuquerque (TCA) has just celebrated its sixtieth anniversary, with a well-attended party with founders, current and former members and staff, and longtime friends and supporters. The club's facilities include hard surface tennis courts, the majority of which are lighted, an outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center, a large club house and a BBQ area. It offers both fun and competitive sports for family and friends, and is open to members and non-members.
TCA is much more than just sporting facilities, says Amy Badger, Senior Assistant Professional USPTA: "Without a doubt, it's the community of people, our members, that create the warm, inviting, friendly, family like atmosphere. You are family when you walk through our doors, member and nonmember alike. The great management and superior teaching staff plays an important role in this uniqueness from other clubs."
People come to the club to just enjoy family time, to get some exercise or to meet up with friends. As well as the tennis, fitness, and swimming facilities, TCA has a kitchen that caters to private parties, a children's playground area, men's sauna, and a cafe that is open during the summer. Given the number of kids running around and working up an appetite playing tennis and swimming, the cafe and its staff are specially appreciated by members.
There are also women's and men's locker rooms, a tennis hitting wall and a tennis pro shop. The club offers "a full line of tennis programming for adults and children, USPTA certified tennis teaching professionals, exceptional summer swim programming including swim team along with special club event programming," adds Badger.
Members can participate in intra-club events such as clinics, mixers, ladders, and drop-ins throughout the year, as well as USTA events including leagues and tournaments. The facilities are open for members in the evenings as well even after the clubhouse is closed.
Badger is very enthusiastic about the PlaySight SmartCourt technology and thinks that everyone should experience it: "This is a multi-camera triangulation system, and the hottest new way to learn the game and understand one's actual play on the court. It continues to trend all over the country and we have been thrilled to be the first club in the Southwest to employ this cutting edge technology. Come check out the TCA!"
Summer is a busy season for the swimmers. The club offers opportunities for recreational and competitive swimming. Swim team participation is open to club members ages 5 to 18. The swim team is one of sixteen that compete in the Sundance Aquatic League. A couple of lanes in the pool are always kept clear for lap swimmers.
TCA members are always happy to participate in and support fundraisers for the community. This past summer two of the pros, with the enormous help of staff and members, recently played a 24-hour tennis marathon to raise funds for Make-A-Wish New Mexico. The previous summer, a hugely successful community family fun day was held with all proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House.
