The Signature Gallery: A Purveyor of Fine Art for Over 20 Years

By Marina I. Jokic

Charles Pabst has been a professional artist for most of his life, creating expressive landscapes for over 50 years. In 1973, he graduated with a degree in fine art from Arizona State University and decided to open his own framing shop which also doubled as his studio. Pabst gradually outgrew the framing business, focusing exclusively on his art. For the next 20 years, he exhibited his work across the U.S., raising his profile as a capable artist.

Vibrant, colorful paintings that depict scenic landscapes are Pabst's forte. He does not try to adhere to a particular style, although he loves to paint nature's pristine beauty. His range and ability to step out of his comfort zone help account for his broad-based appeal as does his exquisite use of light, his gift for mixing color, and his tendency to be poignant.

Pabst's art shows, quite well-known within artistic circles, have consistently oversold throughout the country since the early 1980's. Recognized with various awards and featured in publications such as American Art Collector and Art of the West, his works can be found in private, corporate, and university collections throughout the world.

Gallery director at The Signature Gallery in Santa Fe, Chrissy Sabo is involved in the everyday operations of the business. She enjoys working with both the artists and the clients as well as selecting the type of art that will be on display.

"We consider ourselves to be a 'studio away from home' where you can frequently find artists working in-house on their latest projects," Sabo said. "It is a great way to meet the artist and also a great way to find out more about [his or her] thought process on creating new pieces."

The gallery features a vast array of work, from original paintings in acrylic and oil to limited edition embellished giclee productions, bronze sculpture, and locally sourced juniper tables.

"Our eclectic mix is what sets us apart from other galleries in town; art is a very personal thing, so you have to be able to attract the diversity of people who walk through the doors," Sabo said. "We have twenty-six talented artists here in our Santa Fe location, so you are bound to find something you will fall in love with and have to take home with you."

Sabo advises emerging artists to persevere and get as much exposure as possible. There is a constant flow of new work coming through the three locations of the The Signature Gallery and lots of opportunities for an aspiring artist to make his or her debut.
