The Best Places to Live in Bernalillo County

By Mary Lamphere

The Bernalillo area of New Mexico attracts residents for its suburban feel, residential safety and overall close proximity to major cities and attractions. Homes throughout the county are mostly in the range of about 15-20 years old making them all well-established but not old to the point that they are in need of major repairs. The best places to live in Bernalillo County are contingent upon individual likes and desires such as the ability to live close to a good school or hospital or the ability to have an attractive dining or night life close to home.

Los Ranchos de Albuquerque

This small town in New Mexico has a population of less than 6K people and a very low crime rate making it an ideal place to live especially for young families or families with children. Property crime rates in the area of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque are 1.96 per 1,000 people which is significantly lower than many areas of the state and a close proximity to Albuquerque (only 6 miles) makes for an easy commute into town for work.

Albuquerque

If you're looking for a fun place to live where there's plenty to do and an attractive list of amenities including restaurants and bars for after hours fun, Albuquerque is the place for you. The town of Albuquerque is an attractive area for young adults who want to live close to various fun attractions that will keep them busy while also staying close to the major city where work is plentiful. Crime rates a much higher because this is one of the major hubs of New Mexico so families and senior citizens may be more suited to choose a home outside city limits.

Sandia Knolls

If you're looking for community style living, consider moving to Sandia Knolls. This community is run by the Sandia Knolls Neighborhood Association and it is an ideal place for retirees or those looking for a real community style feel in their neighborhood. There are annual rummage sales and other fun events that bring the entire community together and since the neighborhood is ran by an association there are stringent rules on the upkeep of properties in the area which can help keep home values up even in a declining market.

Paradise Hills

The area of Paradise Hills is the ideal place to live if you're looking for a home that is located close to the city providing an easy commute into or out of the city for work but set far apart enough to provide a suburban living atmosphere. The area features a community center as well as various other parks and recreational offerings that make for an attractive area to live with children or for retirees alike.

South Valley

For big city feel with affordable homes and a lower than average cost of living, South Valley puts you in the center of it all. This area is considered a Census-designated place and is unincorporated. South Valley spans an area of about 30 square miles featuring mostly married couples cohabitating but low income levels are likely partially responsible for higher than average crime rates in the area so, though the area is affordable, it's not necessarily the safest town in Bernalillo County by any means.
