The Best Schools in Bernalillo County

The area of Bernalillo County, New Mexico has a number of public, private and charter schools which can provide exceptional quality education to children of all ages. The Albuquerque Public School System is the primary education provider in the county offering children in Pre-K through the 12th grade with educational opportunities that aim to increase college readiness, improve social skills and prepare children for adult life.

The diverse cultural backgrounds of students in the county has led many teachers to tailor instruction to cultural specific needs so that children are comfortable in their learning environment. Many of the schools in Bernalillo County provide instruction using English as a Second Language (ESL) techniques which help students to master skills both in English proficiency as well as in their own native language. This method of instruction helps students to thrive in a classroom setting and continue their learning at home too.

Some of the best schools in Bernalillo County include:

Algodones Elementary

This school serves students in grades Pre-K through the 5th grade providing a culturally focused education with instruction delivered with English as a Second Language (ESL). Many of the students here come from Native American and Hispanic cultures in which home language is not English. Teachers at Algodones Elementary provide instruction to students with a prime focus on helping them to learn and integrate both within their culture and outside of the comfort zone by providing them with specially designed educational programs that meet the individual needs of each student.

Bernalillo High School

This is the only high school in the county and serves students in grades 9-12 coming from Albuquerque as well as many smaller villages and CDPs throughout the county. An estimated 50% of the students here are Hispanic and approximately 44% of students are Native American. Honors courses, Advanced Placement courses and Pre-Advanced Placement courses are provided to students in Bernalillo High School. About 75% of students who graduate Bernalillo High School go on to attend college either at a two-year institution or a four-year college or university.

Cochiti Elementary & Middle School

The Cochiti Elementary and Middle School provides education for children in Pre-K through the eighth grade. Here students gain skills in reading and math proficiency with many students scoring even in advanced levels towards the end of the school year. The majority of students at Cochiti Elementary and Middle School, like most Bernalillo County schools, are of Hispanic or Native American descent and do not use English as a first language in their homes. To provide students with education that suits their individual learning needs, Cochiti Elementary and Middle School focuses on English as a Second Language and offers instruction that is tailored to student needs.
