Teri's Sweet Garden is Known for Candy, Chocolates and Pickles

By S. Mathur

Teri's Sweet Garden, a family-owned and run candy store in Los Lunas New Mexico is known for its candy, chocolates and pickles.

"Yes that's right pickles," owner Teri Leahigh said, "Pickles is what separates us from our competitors. We have Green Chile Inferno, Soul Scorcher and Red Death for the hot pickles. For the kiddos that like sour we soak our pickles in Tropical Punch, Berry Lemonade and Cherry."

It doesn't just stop with pickles. The shop mixes and matches all sorts of flavors and textures to create a one-of-a-kind experience.

"We also dip Hot Cheetos in chocolate," Leahigh said. "Best combination ever! We also will make chocolate designs specifically to our customers desires. One customer in particular wanted a 3D chocolate sculpture of the Luna Mansion which we did in fact make and it was wonderful."

For more conventional tastes, there's just about everything you could want in a candy store, and then some. Starting with assorted fudge and toffee, there are nuts and chews, gourmet apples and sugar cookies. There are also cakes, cupcakes and pies, strawberries and dipped treats, lollipops and custom designed candies.

Opening Teri's Sweet Garden was a tribute to her father, Leahigh said, although unfortunately he didn't live to see it happen.

"We have been open seven years," she said. "My father was a huge chocoholic and I promised him at a young age that I would grow up and open a candy shop so he would never have to buy his chocolate again. Unfortunately, he passed away before we opened so this is our legacy to him."

As much as the candy and pickles, what draws customers to Teri's Sweet Garden is the infectious sense of fun. Customers are treated like family. Leahigh's goal is to make everyone, young and old, feel like a kid in a candy shop. Every item, from the lively and elegant sugar cookies to the strawberries dipped in chocolate, speaks of the owners' zest for life and all the sweet things in it.

The store also does candy for special events and fundraising. Caramel apples and lollipops are the best selling fundraising favorites. Every season and holiday has its own special treats and the store is prepared for them, from Valentine's Day through Easter to Mother's Day and Christmas.

For people who are not really into chocolate, there are the pickles, with unique flavors like garlic and cherry. Perhaps the best part is that everything is made in the store. That also means customers can bring their ideas and requests for specially designed candies. Sometimes the craziest ideas turn out best. Specially-designed gift baskets with custom candies from Teri's Swet Garden make a great anniversary or office gift.
