SWEAT Yoga Treats the Body Holistically

By Kelly Church

Locally and family owned, SWEAT Yoga Studio gives Albuquerque residents an opportunity to enrich their lives with yoga for all levels. Even though owners, and husband and wife team, Joe Fox and Delynn Davidson were initially hesitant to try yoga, they eventually fell in love after both reaping the physical benefits of practice and opened the studio together in 2013.

SWEAT offers flow classes for 60 and 75 minutes, a 90-minute focus class that's limited to five students, a 90-minute restore class to emphasize relaxation, and 60 minutes or 90 minutes of static yoga, pausing between each pose. There is also a kid's yoga six-week series. Each week has a different focus and kids learn all the elements of yoga, including breathing and safe postures. All classes, except for the focus and kids classes, are heated.

Nicole Hightower, studio manager at SWEAT, said the studio's classes give students an array of physical benefits. From the obvious like increased flexibility, strength and a more toned physique, to the less observable including improved metabolism and circulation, students can experience all of it and more.

"In addition to providing physical benefits, yoga heals the body holistically," Hightower said. "Science has proven yoga's positive impact on all body systems, and it has the added benefit of integrating increased mental aptitude into your practice. Students are often pleasantly surprised by things like their heightened ability to focus, reduced stress and improved sleep patterns."

Hightower called the studio itself state of the art and environmentally friendly. The floors of the studio are specially made for hot yoga studios, giving just the right amount of stick and cushion, and preventing bacteria. An advanced HVAC system controls the air in the studio, for the right amount of heat and humidityand enhancing the amount of oxygen that students can absorb. Humidity, heat and the cooling systems are all energy efficient.

Classes at SWEAT cost $20 for a drop-in class, however a series of classes can be purchased, as well as unlimited monthly, annual and family memberships. According to Hightower, there are also monthly donation-based classes to welcome the community into the SWEAT studio. Donation classes are held outside the normal schedule and allow community members to contribute what they can to each class, instead of the normal drop-in rate. Classes can be signed up for in advance online at
