Senor Murphy Candymaker Celebrates Four Decades of Traditional Candy Making

By Elisha Neubauer

Senor Murphy Candymaker has been making confections for over four decades. Currently, they have four locations, but they didn't start out as a large candy making company. Rather, they started with a group of young and inexperienced crew members who just followed the lead of Neil Murphy, a fourth generation candy-maker.

While the company has grown in leaps and bounds since first launching, one thing hasn't changed: their dedication to high quality, locally made products. "We still make our candy using traditional cooking techniques passed down through four generations," explains Harry Doscher, owner. "Our toffees, brittles, caramels, and fudges are hand stirred in small copper kettles to ensure taste and texture."

Doscher explains that copper promotes proper caramelization of sugars, which can't be reproduced using more modern equipment, at least, without the stabilizers and other additives larger manufacturers use. "Whenever possible, we use local ingredients from small New Mexican businesses that are as committed to quality as we are, such as pistachios from Alamagordo and red and green chile from Hatch, Chimayo and Socorro," he adds.

The oldest store in the Senor Murphy Candymaker line is the LaFonda location. "It serves a lot of tourist but also local who grew up going there as kids," states Doscher. Other locations include a store in the Santa Fe Place Mall (on the south side of town) and one in the DeVargas Center (on the north side of town). "And our newest store is inside the Buffalo Thunder Resort," Doscher affirms. "It serves slushies and gelato in addition to our regular chocolate and candies for those who would like to enjoy something cold by the pool."

To make your shopping experience even better, Senor Murphy's offers unique purchasing choices, including 'Build your own Box' and 'Seasonal Favorites.' Gift cards are available for purchase as well as e-certificates. 'Give Gift' tools on the website allow shoppers to hand-select gifts to be delivered to a group of people.

Doscher is proud of the growth Senor Murphy has experienced. "Though our line of products has greatly our dedication to our recipes and hand-made techniques remains strong," he says. "You can find it in our buttery caramels, our smooth dark chocolate, or the spice of chile that lingers on your tongue: every bite of Señor Murphy's chocolate is a savory indication of our commitment to our chocolate and to our customers."
