Rude Boy Cookies Are Cordial and Delicious

By S. Mathur

Despite the name, you'll never find any rude staff at Rude Boy Cookies. The name is based on ska history and the owners' love of ska music.

"When you visit Rude Boy Cookies we can guarantee you will always receive the highest quality cordial service and delicious cookies," founder and owner Michael M. Silva jr said. "We will never be rude!"

What you will find are freshly made, chewy cookies all day, ice cream, and the only milk bar in the whole state.

The term Rude Boy, or Rude Girl, is a 70s term referring to ska music fans.

"The Rude Boy look was one of sharp black suits with a skinny tie," Silva and Rudie said. "This look was a 'Rude' look. Those that went to dance-halls to see a ska show would be dressed in this style and others would often be heard saying, 'look at that Rude Boy.'"

The nostalgia and family themed fun are echoed in the decor as well. The interior is decorated in mod 50's/60's ska style, with different types of seating. There are stools at the milk bar, like an old fashioned soda shop, as well as family style tables where customers can watch the cookies being made, and a custom checkerboard lounge. There's also an outdoor patio.

The cookies include classics like chocolate chip and peanut butter, and deluxe varieties like s'mores, and oatmeal cream pies. There are also monthly specials like pecan pie bars and caramel apple cider cookies, and vegan and gluten-free options. The fun continues on special occasions and holidays with Star Wars themed cookies for May the 4th, and Mother's Day cookies with appealing iced roses. Long time customers know that the cookies taste best warmed up and that the staff be happy to warm them for you.

For those who are new to Rude Boy Cookies, the best introduction is the Reel Big Waffle or RBW.

"The RBW is chocolate chip cookie dough pressed into a waffle iron, and cooked for about 5 minutes," Silva and Rudie said. "The result is a crisp waffle exterior with a gooey interior, topped with ice cream, whip cream and chocolate drizzle."

An especially spectacular offering is the Strawberry Oat Bar, with a lightly sweetened oat crumble crust, fresh strawberry filling, and an oat crumble and vanilla almond glaze topping. Customers can also get Cookie Paws in April each year, to support pets in need. Rude Boy donates $1.50 to the Animal Humane Association of New Mexico for each Paw Cookie sold.

Ice cream specials include cookie ice cream sandwiches and milkshakes with cookie crumbles. The milk bar actually has different kinds of milk on tap. Customers can get dairy, soy or almond milk and add in flavors like banana, cappuccino, and mint.

You can find Rude Boy Cookies at 115 Harvard SE, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and they're open late.
