Red Root Brings An Ancient Chinese Practice in New Mexico

By Elisha Neubauer

Acupuncture is an age-old tactic used across the centuries to help adjust one's physical and emotional stability. Originating in Ancient China, acupuncture is a process in which a specialist pricks the skin with needles. It is used to alleviate pain and to treat various physical, mental, and emotional conditions.

In Albuquerque, New Mexico, a quaint shop front is bringing this ancient medicine to life.

"Acupuncture helps to put the body back into balance which can get at the root of illnesses and heal them where they start," Dr. Arlo Starr, DOM, said. "It can be incredibly helpful for everything from allergies to pain to dermatology to infertility."

Acupuncture is a natural way to manage side effects of treatments such as chemotherapy and other harsh medications, as well as a natural sleep aid.

"There are very few things that acupuncture cannot be beneficial for," Dr. Starr said.

Although the treatment concept is based on the use of needles, there are other methods which can be applied depending on the client's needs. These additional methods include cups, magnets, lancets, and moxibustion. These processes work great for clients of all ages, including children. Red Root has worked with many children to help alleviate allergies, rashes, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and pain. Additional treatments, such as herbal therapies, have helped with nightmares, coughs, and other imbalances.

"We have treated children as young as 5 weeks old with cupping, massage, and non-insertive acupuncture where a small tool is held over the acupuncture points to adjust the child's energy," Dr. Starr said.

The facility offers a warm and welcoming environment with a stunning backdrop. Over 400 beautiful herbs are displayed in a spectacular wall of jars. These jars evoke a rustic, healing feel from the moment you enter the building.

"People often remark about how beautiful our clinic is and that they feel better just being around our walls of jars of herbs," Dr. Starr said.

Often nicknamed miracle workers, the staff of Red Root have been able to help clients with long-standing issues which they believed to be untreatable. The facility also offers an incredibly skilled massage therapist, Lauren Drake.
