The Range Café: Food to Come Back For

By Ryan Rushton

There's nothing quite like a diner. Matt DiGregory, co-owner of Range Café, explains it like this: "A diner is a place that fills a craving, similar to what you got from home as a kid. It's a bit of non-pretentiousness. Diners bring comfort, and a good diner is one that has something to offer for every taste and palate."

The original Range Café opened up in Bernalilo, New Mexico back in 1992. Today, there are two more Range Café locations in Albuquerque New Mexico, and the original is now in a new Bernalilo location after a 1995 fire. No matter which location you visit, you will still experience the same eclectic and quirky atmosphere, commitment to local art and live music, and mission to serve great food- which is what owners Matt DiGregory and Tom Fenton do.

You can see the restaurant's connection to the local community in the décor and atmosphere of the restaurant. At the Bernalilo location, the walls are filled with memories of the original Range Café and the reopening in the new space.

Of course, you come for the food. At the Range Café, you'll find New Mexican and classic American dishes. As with all diners, the breakfast menu is always popular, and DiGregory emphasizes their efforts to serve the best. DiGregory explains: "We try to combine interesting flavors to create twists on standard breakfast items. Our goal is to create food that you want to come back for." The Range Café tries its best to source its ingredients locally when possible and creates all its dishes from scratch.

With so many great options to choose from, DiGregory struggles to pick a favorite: "The Range Cafe came to be because I love to eat out at breakfast. So I have to say that breakfast is my favorite meal at the Range. I love our New Mexican based items. We have really good bacon! For lunch its our Hoosier Tenderloin sandwich. I'm from Indiana originally and this is a good representation of my home state. For dinner its hard not enjoy Tom's Meatloaf....our rellenos are pretty darn good too!"

Regardless of what you eventually decide on, you'll have a hard time going wrong at the Range Café.
