Pictures Speaks Louder Than Words at Dooney's Photography

By Marina I. Jokic

Dooney's Photography in Rio Rancho is one of New Mexico's premier professional photographers. Armed with a camera and a keen eye for perspective, lighting, and composition, founder of the studio Dan Holguin has been a relatively new player in the field of photography. Together with his wife, Holguin has built Dooney's into a powerhouse of a studio over the last few years and garnered the loyalty of countless clients.

"We offer stunning and wildly colorful portrait photography, from high school seniors to family and everything in between at a competitive price," Holguin said. "We believe that our niche is nestled in the unique experience that is Dooney's Photography."

The niche which Holguin referred to is the interactive approach that Dooney's tries to bring to photography. Rather than simply asking clients to pose, the photographer interacts with them on a personal level thereby eliciting genuine emotions. You'll notice that the photos on Dooney's site seem more personal and evocative than your average portrait. Holguin delivers personalized service through choosing the right location, one-on-one budgeting, and conceptualizing the final product. Holguin and his wife are a two-person team, hence no overhead costs and lower pricing for their customers.

Initially working in the music business in Nashville, Holguin would hang around the photographers as they captured images of the recording artists. Completely intrigued by the process and the artistry, he found that photography was a multifaceted tool for self-expression. Holguin pushed on with learning the craft, consuming himself with all kinds of different projects. Eventually, he left Nashville, moved back to his home state of New Mexico and launched Dooney's shortly thereafter.

"I wanted to learn wedding photography [because] in my opinion, the best place to learn this was the wedding capital of the world, Las Vegas, [so] I moved my family once more [and] I took a photographer position with the world renowned Chapel of the Flowers [on the strip]," Holguin said. "It wasn't but a few months later [that] I was working with the Rio, MGM, [and] the Bellagio."

Holguin spent the next five years working in the wedding and commercial photography business in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, the most formative years of his career, and learned from some of the best photographers in the field. His knowledge and personal passion have been instrumental in building Dooney's into a successful enterprise.
