New Mexico Association for Home & Hospice Care: Improving Patient Care At Home

By Elizabeth R. Elstien

Most people would rather receive needed healthcare at home than in a doctor's office or hospital, especially when recovering from a recent hospitalization or illness. The New Mexico Association for Home & Hospice Care (NMAHHC) represents 147 home and hospice agencies statewide that work to provide quality home care access to any state resident who is infirm, chronically ill, or disabled.

Executive Director Joie Glenn explains, "Everyone likes to be at home. Care at home can help a person recover in a space where they feel comfortable, with loved ones and supports. With improvements in technology, most care whether it is custodial or more acute can be provided in the home." Additionally, it can be cost-effective, in that it is less expensive than institutional care such as hospitals or nursing homes. Most people do not require 24 hour care because they have a support system that can supplement what is provided by the home health or hospice provider agency.

Fostering successful patient care among its agency members is a key part of the association's mission. "NMAHHC is a resource that serves its membership by facilitating advocacy, networking, education, and communication to promote success and best practices in home and hospice care and related support services," Glenn tells us. Glenn should know, as she has been associated with the organization in some capacity for over 20 years - serving as President of the Board of Directors before accepting the role of Executive Director.

NMAHHC holds four meetings a year to provide training and networking for its members. Glenn notes, "Our last event was our Spring Conference in May. It was extremely successful, and we are now in the process of holding our Summer Conference on August 6-7, 2015."

Each member adheres to a code of ethics set down by the organization, which also trains all its members. Additionally, NMAHHC works with legislators on the federal and state level to better craft policies pertinent to home and hospice care.
