New Mexico Bike N Sport Keeps Riders Rolling Along

By Pamela Sosnowski

Santa Fe has the distinction of being one of America's best cities for bike riders; there are hundreds of miles of trails that take peddlers past adobe structures, galleries, and mountains. It was also named a top mountain biking destination by USA Today. Helping to keep cyclists happily rolling along the city's roads and trails is New Mexico Bike N Sport. Since 1998 they've been servicing the bike riding community with bikes, accessories, helmets, riding apparel and more.

"We offer a-to-z bicycle repair and maintenance hosted by Tennyson Hulcy who has toured with several pro cycling teams as the chief mechanic," owner Tony Farrar said. "We also do bike sizing and fitting with certified fitters from several fitting schools. Making sure the bike caters to each individual's biomechanical needs is key to enjoying the cycling experience. We also like to make sure the foot-to-shoe interface is correct when doing a fit."

The shop carries the largest selection of bikes in the Santa Fe area and gives customers the opportunity to test ride a bike and a money-back guarantee. The staff are experienced riders themselves and can offer recommendations for appropriate models and the latest equipment for each rider's needs. All new bikes arrive in boxes to be assembled in-store by professional bike mechanics, a requirement by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission that the store is happy to uphold. Not only do they assemble a new bike, but they tune and test each one before placing it on the showroom floor. Walk-ins are welcome for bike repairs.

NM Bike N Sport also rents high quality road and mountain bikes beginning around $50 per day that decrease the longer one needs a bike, making them the go-to resource for tourists that want to see the city and surrounding beauty on two wheels. The store also hosts weekly group road rides for experienced riders that have a bike in good working order. The routes average 50 miles and sometimes include hills and other challenging terrain.

No matter your riding level, Farrar has a few words of advice for all bike owners to keep their rides in tip-top shape.

"When it comes to maintenance of your own bike, make sure the bike is lubricated frequently," he said. "The chain needs to be wiped clean after oil has penetrated into the pins. This will reduce wear and dirt accumulation; the shifting is much smoother too. Having the chain checked for stretch is important as well. Once the chain stretches to a certain point, it will require full drive train replacement (much pricier) instead of just chain replacement."

The store will soon be moving into a larger space in the same shopping center they're currently located in on C Cordova. Farrar is grateful to be a trusted resource for bike riders of all abilities and to introduce new riders to the enjoyment of the sport.

"NM Bikensport has always been very passionate towards the sport of cycling," he said. "It is what we live to do and are so fortunate to have access to world class, beautiful trails and open roads."
