MST Adventures Showcases New Mexico's Beauty With Recreational Sports Instruction

By Pamela Sosnowski

New Mexico is a state that boasts a variety of natural beauty from rolling hills to majestic mountains and canyons; from rushing rivers to tranquil lakes and everything in between. This makes it the perfect playground for any outdoor enthusiast, whether they get their rush from skiing, kayaking, or mountain biking. It is also what inspired Michael Carney to co-found MST (Mountain, Stream, and Trail) Adventures along with his friend, Corey Spoores. The Albuquerque-based business has been hosting outdoor activities, adventures, and tours since 2016.

"Both Corey and myself grew up in the outdoors," Carney said. "We started MST Adventures as a way to share our passion with others. MST Adventures is New Mexico's only year-round, multi-sport guide, instruction, and rental service. Meeting wonderful people and helping them experience the outdoors is my favorite part of the job."

Through MST Adventures, a client can take a guided stand-up paddle boarding tour down the Rio Grande during an annual balloon festival, take a weekly kayaking lesson, participate in a whitewater skills clinic, or rent snowshoes for a winter excursion. The company also hosts free community events, usually announced on their Facebook page. Regular community-based excursions include guided mountain bike rides, full moon paddle trips, and snowshoe treks.

With so many bodies of water suitable for sports in the Albuquerque area, it's no surprise that stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) and kayaking are two of the most popular activities offered by MST Adventures. All staff members are certified with the American Canoe Association and teach an emphasis on water safety in addition to basic SUP skills. This certification include deep and swift water rescue.

"In addition to our expert instruction and wide range of classes available, our prices are competitive and we allow students to break up their lesson across multiple sessions," Carney said. "This gives your brain time to digest the material and your body time to recover."

Water sports instruction ranges from classes for beginner SUP or kayaking on flat or moving water up to custom classes and clinics for more advanced kayakers who want to learn how to safely do the kayak roll. As Carney is also an award-winning photographer and video producer in addition to outdoorsman, MST Adventures also offers photography lessons with a focus on capturing the landscapes of New Mexico. Private instruction is also available in kayaking, mountain biking, and photography.

For those that have mastered an outdoor sport but need the equipment to enjoy it, MST Adventures rents equipment for SUP, kayaking, snowshoeing, and more. Equipment may be conveniently picked up and dropped off at several retail outdoor recreation stores in the area, or a staff member can arrange to bring equipment to a specified location.

MST Adventures also instructs clients on the "Leave No Trace" ethics of being a responsible outdoor enthusiast, and supports several organizations dedicated to preserving the quality of rivers and the outdoors. Lessons, clinics, and tours vary with the seasons; visit the MST Adventures site at www.mstadventures.com or sign up for their newsletter to stay updated about their latest offerings.
