Get Contemporary at Matrix Fine Art

Matrix Fine Art is an award-winning contemporary art gallery located in Albuquerque, NM with a focus on works by women and emerging artists. The gallery opened its doors in 2007, hosting exhibitions in media ranging from photography, watercolors, and acrylics to mixed media and video installations.

Artist and owner Regina Held struck out on her journey in the art business by opening a printmaking studio in South Valley in 1996: New Grounds Print Workshop and Gallery. The studio was meant to be a space for artists to practice printmaking fundamentals; as Held explains, it was "nestled between fruit and nut trees and pretty much not open to the public." Within six months, artists working in New Grounds asked Held about displaying their work. A gallery component was born. The first show attracted 200 people to the opening reception. After that positive experience, Held says,"I kept scheduling 4 shows a year and all of them were well attended and we even sold quite a bit of art."

In 2000, New Grounds Workshop and Gallery moved to Nob Hill, where Held began having an exhibit rotation every month. Even more people visited the gallery because of its accessible location and outstanding art installations. "In the meanwhile," explains Held, "I was very active within the Albuquerque arts community; I served on the boards of Albuquerque United Artists, Magnifico and the Albuquerque Art Business Organization, and I got to know pretty much all working artists in town." Seven years later, Held took over the space next to New Grounds and welcomed emerging artists from all over New Mexico to display their work at Matrix Fine Art.

With 5000 square feet between New Grounds and Matrix, Held has plenty of space to display art- not that any of it goes to waste. "There is art everywhere," laughs Held, "even in the hallways and bathrooms!" With her connections in the Albuquerque arts scene, Held continues to put on a new exhibit every month - with a First Friday reception. Perhaps the secret to Matrix Fine Art's success lies in its ability to work with the artists whose work is displayed in the gallery. Held says, "I give my artists about 12 to 15 months to produce an exhibition which results in high quality work."

The most recent exhibit to receive attention was organized by photographers Pat Berett and Tim Anderson, entitled Image NM 2015. "The images were incredible, both technically and visually. It received some nice media attention and was seen by a few hundred visitors," says Held.

Matrix Fine Art was voted best art gallery by Local IQ and Albuquerque The Magazine. The gallery can be found at 3812 Central Avenue SE 100 A, Albuquerque, NM and is open to the public Tuesday 10:00AM ? 4:00PM and Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00AM ? 6:00PM.
