Mantecon Studio Teaches Art Technique, Encourages New Inspiration for Artists

By Kelly Church

Lauren Mantecón is an artist, specifically a painter, mixed media artist and photographer, who opened Mantecón Studio in 2014 to share her love of art with the Santa Fe, NM community. Her studio provides classes that are hands on for students to learn the techniques that Mantecón has spent more than 25 years honing.

"What first began as a soul-searching investigation (exploring the body politic through achieving a BFA in conceptual photography and MFA in painting) emerged into a love of the spiritual and physical," Mantecón said.

Mantecón's personalized art classes can be with a single individual, or for a group of people. She also offers long distance art mentoring via Skype. During these classes, the client is provided insight by Mantecón to come up with new artistic ideas and techniques to bring those ideas to fruition.

"With 20 years of experience, my teaching [has] brought me to a philosophy of structure and release," Mantecón said. "I teach some technique, then encourage a participant to let go. This allows for a right brain and left brain to play in the mix of making art."

Wednesdays at Mantecón Studio are also open studio afternoons, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Open to professional artists or those who want to explore their new talents, Wednesdays allow like-minded artists to interact with one another. Mantecón also offers occasional instruction during these hours, and artists have the opportunity to paint alongside her. Anyone who wants to participate in open studio time must call ahead to reserve their spot.

Occasionally, Mantecón hosts workshops at her studio, and at other locations. In October, she hosted Anything Goes: Full, a four-day workshop at Mantecón Studio that took a deep look at painting and mixed media arts. In early November, Mantecón will travel to Lexington, KY to host The Alchemy of Mixed Media from November 4 through November 7. Some of the art mediums that will be used in this workshop are paint, dry pigments, wax and more.

Mantecón Studio can be featured on art tours throughout Santa Fe. Mantecón works in collaboration with Elaine Ritchel of Santa Fe Art Tours to be part of the Sense of Place Tour and Art Workshop. This art tour embraces the beauty of the city to give each attendee a special sense of place within Santa Fe.

"I used the conceptual ideas of the self portrait to investigate deep psychological underpinning in the self," Mantecón said. "In a sense of the creative act was permission to really know myself, limitations and strengths."
