Learn to Dance EmiArteFlamenco Style

By Jake Levin

Emmy Grimm enjoys nothing more than sharing her passion of flamenco dancing at her very own studio, EmiArteFlamenco, in Santa Fe, N.M.

Flamenco, which can trace its origins to southern Spain, is Grimm's safe space. The oldest records of the dance date to the 18th century, in 1774. She'll always have flamenco in her life, both for her own pleasure and as her gift to the Santa Fe community.

"It is a place where everyone can come to experience and learn about Flamenco," Grimm said of her studio. "The Academy is like a family, not a big business. Everyone is greeted the same and will have a wonderful long lasting, meaningful relationship."

Grimm said that flamenco is a "beautiful art form" that everyone can relate to in their own individual way. Traditionally, there is a dancer, singer and guitarist; the dancer expresses itself with movement, the guitarist expresses itself through its hands and the singer expresses itself through voice.

"Each person's story is different, which makes it profound," Grimm said. "As humans, we express many emotions such as joy, passion, angst and love. Through flamenco, all of these can be expressed, individually."

Beginners don't need to be afraid of trying out a class at EmiArteFlamenco. People of all ages are encouraged to give it a whirl, as there is a specific youth company within the studio.

It's important to be patient with yourself when starting flamenco lessons, as Grimm likened it to learning to walk, riding a bike, learning to read or developing any other type of skill.

"In Flamenco you never arrive," Grimm said. "You always have a 'camino' in this art form. You should never stop learning."

EmiArteFlamenco is located at 1005 South St. Francis Dr., Suite 115, in Santa Fe. To learn more about this beautiful art from, be sure to check out Grimm's website,
