Quilting has been an American artistic tradition since the 1800's, and continues to be a strong presence in the world of arts and crafts across the country. Quilting is a unique medium that allows people to express their creativity with fabrics, shapes, and textures, while creating something beautiful and practical.
It was in 2000 that Quilts Olé first opened shop on the west side of Albuquerque. Under the oversight of Cathy Gormley, it acquired a reputation for selling some of the best contemporary fabrics and a wide assortment of batiks. The shop was featured in the Quilt Sampler in May 2005 and named one of the "Top 10" quilt shops in the country.
In 2007, the shop relocated to an old feed store on Corrales Road, and a year later, its current owner, Sandra Eichenberg, purchased it and kept the core business going. Bright, funky fabrics, hand-dyed batiks and sample quilts stretch throughout the store, inspiring customers to try out new and bold projects. Quilts Olé sells their sample quilts usually during the Corrales Harvest Festival, as well as during the month of December.
At the shop, you will encounter various hand-crafted goods including wall hangings, bed quilts, and table runners. There are also tablecloths, place mats, hand bags and even tuffets.
"Piecing, applique, and other techniques are abundant in our quilts," Eichenberg said. "We are fortunate to have three very talented long arm quilters [who] can add the perfect finishing touch to any quilt top masterpiece."
One of the advantages of shopping at Quilts Olé is that they have long arm quilt artists on staff to help you finish your project however simple or elaborate. Every Saturday morning, they have at least one long arm quilter on the premises to give estimates and offer design and production ideas. And you don't have to schedule an appointment on Saturdays.
"Quilts Olé is a happy place to get inspired about any kind of sewing project," Eichenberg said. "We have a team of sales associates that collectively has over 238 years of quilting experience."
A highly experienced staff paired with a wide selection of exquisite fabrics makes for a rewarding customer experience, which is Eichenberg's ultimate goal. No project is outside the scope of the Quilts Olé staff of experts. The shop offers a free demo on most Saturday mornings to help with techniques or show customers small projects that can be finished within a few hours.
"Everyone at Quilts Olé loves fabric, and we love making your shopping experience a delight," Eichenberg said.
