Karma Cycle Creates Scalable Indoor Rides for Cyclists of All Levels, Even Beginners, Without Intimidation

By Kelly Church

At Karma Cycle, every ride is unique to every rider. The company's motto, and hashtag, is #itsnotaboutthebike, and the Albuquerque, NM studio gives every rider the opportunity to make their ride their own. The studio is welcoming to riders of all levels, and especially wants to make sure new students who have never experienced indoor cycling feel comfortable walking in for their first few classes.

MG McCullough is the owner of Karma Cycle, a spin instructor and a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, and when it comes to surviving a Karma Cycle class, she said a big part of it is remaining motivated. Instructors often inspire students to set specific goals for their classes, or even overall fitness goals they want to reach to continue to stay motivated.

"I think music is a really important, motivating factor when you're riding a one-wheeled bike, going nowhere, in a darkened room, but we also try to encourage you to set a goal or an intention," McCullough said. "Remember why you came and believe that you can do it."

The studio hopes to motivate and encourage new students to come in and not feel intimidated. In fact, McCullough compares it to getting your house cleaned. Many people feel like they need to be in shape to attend a certain gym, but McCullough said you don't clean your house to prepare for your cleaning service to come over. Fitness is the same way.

"Everyone has to start somewhere, and Karma's classes can accommodate everyone, regardless of fitness level," McCullough said. "We use an effort scale to guide our workouts, so you are always in control of how hard you work. Start where you are, work to where you want to be. It's your ride."

The studio uses high-end, quality gear. Karma Cycle is outfitted with Schwinn power consoles, and instructors are Schwinn MPower Certified to be sure students are getting a great ride indoors. Karma Cycle students can also snag Cycle Cave clip-in shoes at a discounted rate. The goal is to offer a smooth ride that is the equivalent to a workout outdoors.

"We believe that exercising should be empowering, not punishing, and that everyone has to start somewhere," McCullough said. "We also know that everyone is on their own path, in life as well as in fitness. At Karma, we want to be welcoming, not judgmental, and what I enjoy most about this work is seeing people become more confident versions of themselves, not just on the bike, but also in life."

All Karma Cycle classes are 50 minutes. New clients can take advantage of a special that offers 10 days of spinning for just $10. Clients get rewards for every class they book online and can use them for future purchases, and there is also an option to pay only $15 per class if you buy a series of 20 classes.
