How To Stop Pests in Their Tracks: An Interview with B&Y Pest Control

By Kristen Bosse

Please describe a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We are a full service Pest Control company treating all types of pests: Termites, Ants, Roaches, Spiders, Rodents, Pigeons, Bee/Wasps, Wildlife removal and much much more!

How did you get into this line of work?

Robert (Owner), received his degree in Biology (from the University of Minnesota). When he moved his family down from northern Minnesota, he started a weekend pest control company treating houses. This grew until he went full time in 1984, turning into B & Y Pest Control Inc.

What is the first thing someone should do once they suspect a pest problem in their home?

First and foremost is to educate ones self by determining the specific pest (IE bees vs wasps, ants vs termites etc). Another good "rule of thumb" is to just walk around the house and remove any wood that is lying against the property, check all door/windows seals (repair where needed), and check for any entrance points where a potential non invited guest can make their way inside (IE cracks in the stucco, doors that do not close completely etc). Call us for a free consultation.

What would you say is the most difficult part of your job?

Time Management & Marketing (be it social media or commercial media)

For residential pest control, is it a long process? How long does it usually take from initial planning to completion?

The initial service varies from one half hour to one hour. Regular maintenance takes about half an hour.

How do you know if you simply have a few bees or rodents around the house or it is a real problem?

With the sign of any rodents (be it actual sittings of the rodents or just their fecal matter), that is usually safe to say there are others and the home needs to be treated. As for bees/wasp, if you just have a few on your flowers, more than likely you do not have a hive and are in no danger. If there is a large quantity of bees around drain channels (etc) this would be a good time to give us a call.

What should homeowners be looking for in a qualified pest control company?

In order of importance: honesty, reliability, availability, competitive pricing, informative.

*Informative: we make every effort to ensure the customer understands exactly what we are going to be spraying and what we are treating for, *Reliability: We are not happy until you are happy, *Honesty: We take pride in what we do! And if you don't need a service, we will not recommend it, *Availability: We strive to get people on the schedule right away! We understand that you don't want those creepy crawlers living with you, *Competitive pricing: We understand this is just as important as anything on this list. We are continually price shopping in order to keep the most affordable prices on the market!

What sets your business apart from other comparable companies? Is there anything you believe you do better/different?

Putting the customer first. We strive to be pleasant both on the phone and in the field. We always (if possible) do what we say for the price we quote.

Once the new homeowner moves in, are there any precautions they should take relating to pest control within the first couple weeks?

If the house was empty, watch for spiders, hatching eggs (usually oriental roach) and larva usually beetles in the cupboards and other dark areas that may have been dormant for long periods of time.

What's the best way for people to get in contact with you?

Phone, Face book, or email.
