Fitness Meets Fun at Albuquerque's Open Gym

By Courtney Clark

Albuquerque's Open Gym is a locally-owned, 24-hour gym intent on providing a fitness area even for the busiest of people. Its fun, comfortable environment is affordable, friendly, and most importantly, effective. Open Gym offers a variety of classes to help clients enjoy working out to develop long-term healthy lifestyles.

Open Gym was founded by Bill Keleher, a native to Albuquerque, and is run by other locals. Because the business is not a franchise or chain, clients do not have to pay franchise or enrollment fees. Fitness classes are free to members, and first visits to the location are free. The monthly cost is only $29.99; as the website says, "you can't afford NOT to get healthy with us."

The gym offers a variety of classes. Keleher explains, "Our classes get you fit faster, keep you keen on exercise, and get you the gym on days that willpower alone won't." In addition, the classes will help hone muscles that normal workouts miss, build up the pulmonary system, and increase overall health. Zumba is a great class for those who love to dance while yoga helps relax while providing a full-body workout.

Other classes include Basic Training, PowerFit, Metabolic Blast, Cardio Kickboxing, and Indoor Cycling. Basic Training, as in "get down and give me 20," Keleher says, is a nonstop hour of cardio and weights paired with music. PowerFit mixes aerobics, strength training, and core work into a 45-minute workout using weights, kettle bells and steps. Metabolic Blast incorporates HIIT (high intensity interval training) and uses suspension straps, steps, and much more for an on-and-off workout.

Cardio kickboxing was added to the class list due to popular demand, Keleher says while suggesting bringing water and a sweat towel to this class. Combining punching, kicking, and cardio, this class will build up endurance. Finally, Indoor Cycling is taught to music and involves varying intensities of speed and gears. "The overall goal of the class is cardiovascular conditioning," Keleher explains, with Thursdays focusing on conditioning and Tuesdays replicating an outdoor ride.

Located close to every part of town, Open Gym is a great option for those who want to spice up their workout routines or get into shape and need a little help. With excellent classes, equipment, and high-quality personal trainers and staff, clients are in good hands at Open Gym. And unlike many large and franchise gyms, this business is judgment-free with one focus: to help others stay fit and have fun.
