Dusty L. Humes, PhD Does Double Duty as Psychologist and Forensics Expert

By Pamela Sosnowski

As a licensed psychologist, Dr. Dusty L. Humes spends much of her time providing clinical psychology services to help treat and improve the mental health of her patients. But she is unique in her profession in that she also does double duty as a forensics expert.

My practice is partly clinical and partly forensic in nature," she explains. "Clinical services include psychological testing, individual and family therapy, and, on occasion, consultation to agencies or individuals focused on helping them better understand mental health problems and how to treat them. Forensic services are those provided to courts, attorneys, state or federal agencies and include such things as conducting pre-trial evaluations in criminal cases or psychological evaluations for civil courts or professional licensing boards. Most of the time, my practice is fairly evenly split between these two types of psychological services."

Dr. Humes hails from the Chicago area, and has spent most of her adult life in the Southwest. She moved to Albuquerque in 2012, drawn by the city's cultural life and variety of outdoor activities available. She developed an interest in psychology at a young age, and obtained her degrees from University of Texas and Northwestern University.

"I have been fascinated by psychology as long as I can remember," she says. "I read pretty much everything on psychology I could get my hands on as early as middle school and was practicing hypnosis on my friends in high school. I have always wanted to understand the reasons for human behavior and have had a long standing interest in the psychology underlying criminal behavior."

Much of her training has focused on working with individuals that have hard-to-treat disorders including anxiety, self-injury, substance abuse, and eating disorders. She takes a holistic approach to therapy with her clients, teaching the importance of self-care and how to create balance in one's life. In addition to in-office psychotherapy and assessment, she offers virtual face-to-face Internet therapy sessions for clients residing in nearby areas including Austin, Dallas, Santa Fe, and other parts of Texas and New Mexico.

Dr. Humes also specializes in working with adolescents and young adults and enjoys helping them get through the challenging phases of life as they discover who they are as adults. In many cases she also works with families to help them understand their child's disorder and work together towards success.

"I often conduct evaluations to determine what level of care an individual with substance abuse or an eating disorder needs," she explains. "Can they be treated in outpatient psychotherapy or do they need a more intense (hospitalization or intensive outpatient) treatment program?"

On the forensics side, Dr. Humes has over 15 years of experience working with courts in Texas and New Mexico providing testimonies, conducting evaluations, and submitting reports for both criminal and civil trials. She can also assess if someone is competent to stand trial.
