By Antonio Mondragon

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Five Star Electric is a full-service electrical contractor. We are fully licensed, bonded and insured for 2 million. We offer full service for residential, commercial and industrial projects. We provide service for repairs or full on new builds. We offer free estimates in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho.

What are a few of the most common electric upgrades that homeowners need to make during a remodel or new construction project?

Most homes will need an electrical service upgrade when adding refrigerated air. This is required to add more power for the additional loads to the electrical service. This requires PNM coordination and city permitting. We will guide our customers through this process.

When is usually the best time to do electrical work on a home/room in the remodel/build process?

With electrical work any time would be okay to start a project. Projects requiring attic work would be best to start first thing in the morning.

Are there any special permits for electrical changes that are necessary in your area?

Permits are only required when work is done to the electrical meter and utility company is involved. But a permit can be received for any project if wanted.

What is one of the biggest challenges with electrical service that comes up during a home remodel/renovation?

One of the biggest challenges is during a remodel is when homeowners are still living in the home. Living without a functional kitchen can be tough. My recommendation would be to plan on BBQ grill or microwave because remodels can take up to a full month to complete. Also storage container rental is not bad idea so furniture can be stored and not damaged.

Do you have any tips for homeowners about remodeling/renovating and getting electrical work done?

My tip would be to do your research and ask a lot of questions always get a written estimate and get a time frame of how long it will take to complete your project so your home doesn't stay demolished longer than needed.

What's the best way for people to contact you and your company?

The best way to contact Five Star Electric would be to call me at (505) 489-5635. We are available Monday through Friday 8-5 and Saturdays by appointment only. If I don't answer leave me a detailed message and I will return your call within 24 hours.
