DIY vs. Professional Pest Control: An Interview with Dennis Phillips of Manzano Pest Management, LLC

By Dennis Phillips

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Manzano Pest Management is a locally owned family business that was established in 2004. Manzano Pest Management offers general and organic pest control services for commercial businesses and residences.

Can you describe a common situation where homeowners have a pest problem and try to treat it themselves?

The most common pest control issue that people try to treat is odorous house ants, most commonly known as sugar ants. These ants can be difficult to control.

What would be one of the standard professional treatments in that situation?

The standard treatment would be a sweet ant bait, as well as a residual nonrepellent liquid in cracks and crevices.

In general, what's the difference in effectiveness and results between DIY compared with professional treatments?

DIY or commercially available products have limited effectiveness due to the fact that the chemicals are for the most part repellent and will usually cause the insects to move. Professional treatments, for Manzano Pest, are based around the theory of IPM or integrated pest management. IPM is a method where chemical based treatments are not the end-all. Other factors such as sanitation and exclusion are addressed.

Can do-it-yourself pest control cause any potential problems?

Yes, all chemicals should be applied per the label requirements. DIY products fall into this category. Failure to follow the label can cause exposure and illnesses related to the chemical. Homeowners should always ask what the chemical is and if there are any restrictions on uses. They should also read the labels on DIY products as some of them have specific restrictions.

Are there any circumstances or particular pests where DIY works fairly well?

Yes, DIY wasp and hornet killers are very effective at knocking down those paper wasp nests. Niban granules are another product that is effective against roaches and ants.

Do you have any tips for when a homeowner should NOT attempt any DIY pest treatments?

Bed bug and termite control should be addressed by professionals.

What's the best way for people to contact your company?

The best way is to call (505) 220-2127.
