Bizzy B. Cakes' Growing Customer Base Keeps Its Owner Busy Indeed

By Pamela Sosnowski

There was a time when custom cake creator Brittany Church jokingly almost named her business Burnt Cake in honor of all of the ruined creations she racked up while honing her culinary skills. But fortunately, Church has come a long way since the days she let down friends with desserts that were just barely edible. Her Albuquerque-based bakery, Bizzy B. Cakes, is living up to its name, having no shortage of customers since opening barely a year ago.

"Our menu is diverse and full of options for everyone," Church said. "Our cake menu alone has 18 flavors. We offer an abundant amount of flavors for French macarons, pies, and pastries as well. We also offer vegan and gluten-free options."

Church is a New Mexico native who learned baking from her mother and later attended Escoffier Academy to study pastry and culinary arts. Bizzy B. Cakes was opened in honor of her mother and so that she could share her passion with the local community. Since launching the cake shop in December 2016, Church has found she's booking cake orders six months in advance. She and her team have created everything from extravagant, one-of-a-kind wedding cakes to custom birthday cakes in the shapes of cars, sneakers, animated characters, and more. Virtually anything a customer can dream up can easily be recreated in batter, frosting, and fondant form.

"We are a custom bakery," Church said. "If you walk in and don't see what you want, we will make it for you with short notice if our schedule allows it. We are also artists here. We specialize in weddings, special occasion, and 3D custom cakes."

Every Bizzy B. Cake creation contains nothing but fresh, authentic, and all-natural ingredients such as premium chocolate, vanilla, pistachios, strawberries, cream cheese, and more. The bakery currently offers 18 tantalizing cake flavors such as bananas foster, creamsicle, coconut lime, dulce de leche and more, in addition to traditional flavors like vanilla and chocolate. For an additional fee most desserts can be made as a vegan or gluten-free option.

Pricing varies since every cake is different; Church recommends booking an appointment to discuss ideas and enjoy a free cake tasting of two flavors for wedding consultations. She loves the challenge that arises with each new cake order, and giving customers one-on-one attention.

I enjoy talking to customers who want something uniquely special for their event," she said. "Creating something new and exciting for their kids or loved one. I love going in to work doing something I love, even knowing that I may not have a break that day or have a minute to sit down."

The shop is open Tuesdays through Saturdays. Although appointments are encouraged for custom cake orders, customers are always welcome to visit. Order delivery is also available on Saturdays only, for an additional delivery charge.

And just how good are Bizzy B. Cakes? So good that a reviewer on Yelp claims he witnessed a former food critic happily lapse into a chocolate-induced coma after downing eight of Church's cupcakes in one sitting.

Looks like she'll never have to worry about disappointing her cake eaters ever again.
