Back at the Ranch Shows These Boots are Made for Walkin', Fashion, and Just About Anything

By Elisha Neubauer

Wendy Lane Henry was no stranger to small retail business. In 1972, she launched her very first retail store in Florida, Avant Garde Leotard. In the early 80s, she headed off to New York City where she started a shop named Wendy Lane, a women's wear store. But, in 1989, Henry would take a vacation trip which would alter her life immensely.

Henry couldn't have foreseen how a simple trip to Santa Fe could change everything. But, that's exactly what happened, for during her visit, Henry made the decision to stay...never returning to New York City. A year later, she opened her final retail store, Back at the Ranch.

Back at the Ranch began in 1990 as a simple vintage cowboy boot store. The store fulfilled a dream of Henry's, who had always wanted to live out West. Today, the shop has transformed into a custom boot store and has since gone on to trademark, establish, and introduce styles of boots that were not on the market before.

The company's custom made cowboy boots use only the best materials, which have been painstakingly chosen and assembled by second and third generation craftsmen. Each boot is handmade in their El Paso, Texas Factory, which was launched in 2007. "Our fit has been perfected and our silhouette is distinctive," states Henry.

While their fit, silhouette, and style is on point, Henry attributes one other factor for the store's tremendous success: her people. "Our Customer Service is impeccable," she boasts. "My staff is knowledgeable, talented, savvy, and sophisticated." Another selling point? The boots are made in America and are crafted authentically.

With so many cowboy boot styles available from so many chain retailers, why should someone purchase custom made one from niche stores? What is the draw? Well, according to Henry, The bespoke cowboy boot is a privilege, a luxury, and an enduring investment. "A cowboy boot is an American classic," says Henry. "Our boots are a luxury that can be tailored for each individual -- the ultimate self expression."

The cowboy boot has long been considered the rock star of every season, being worn with everything from shorts and summer dresses to jeans and heavy coats. Their versatility makes them more than just a trendy fashion accessory; they're a staple of every wardrobe. To keep with the ever changing trends, Back at the Ranch has learned to adapt, adding fashion forward concepts to this American classic, with new colors, materials, and designs. "I set about making the best handmade cowboy boot ever," explains Henry.
