Art Santa Fe: Celebrating the Transcendent, Unifying Power of Art

By Paul Rowe

Sante Fe is a globally recognized, and greatly revered, mecca for art. Boasting the second-largest art market in the United States with over 240 art galleries, the city is also home to Art Sante Fe, a world-class international art fair held annually in July. Introducing art galleries from around the world to the contemporary market, Art Santa Fe has drawn in increasingly large international crowds over the last fifteen years.

"We draw a lot of people interested in the arts creating a perfect environment for an art fair," says Art Santa Fe Director Charlotte Jackson. "What brings artists and galleries together is the idea of being in one place with like-minded people, with the understanding that these people will be coming to view, and possibly buy, their work."

Originally launching as a hotel art fair in 1995 at the same time as Site Santa Fe, producers London International took over Art Santa Fe in 1999, eventually moving Art Santa Fe to the old Sweeney Convention Center, where it quickly became a vastly successful, annual international event.

This year, Art Santa Fe is proud to welcome "The Puzzle Project," a unique art installation started in 2006 in Osaka, Japan by artist Takashi Inaba and since featured at renowned galleries from Toronto to Paris. Inaba has described the concept of this installation as, "Fusion: exceeding the boundaries of nation, religion, and race with art."

As Puzzle Project artists say of their work, "The world is a place where things connect and interconnect; they affect each other regardless of direct relations. This project will present a world showing how these interconnections and relations represent the order and disorder of existence." This sense of deeply connected works of art brings to life the very philosophy behind Art Santa Fe: artists, galleries, and patrons from around the globe coming together to celebrate work that, when juxtaposed, creates an experience transcending the limits of individual expression.

"The Santa Fe Art Trifecta is a wonderful draw for both visitors and locals," says Jackson. "This includes The Folk Art Market, Art Santa Fe, and Site Santa Fe, covering ten days of art. This will be a very exciting week in Santa Fe."

With years of experience under its belt, Art Santa Fe has established itself as a unique event in the art world, offering art buyers an opportunity that goes beyond the fair's doors. People pilgrimage to Santa Fe to draw inspiration from art and from one another, and to sublimate their collective work into a higher experience for both artist and buyer.
