Art Attack: New Mexico's Oldest, Locally Owned Pottery and Painting Studio

By Kelly Church

Welcome to New Mexico's oldest locally owned do-it-yourself pottery studio, where anyone can come and create a masterpiece. With more than 700 ceramic items to choose from, the options are nearly endless. Mix in the choice for canvas painting, mosaics, and personalized paint-by-number canvases, and customers can keep coming back for an entirely different art experience every time.

The Albuquerque studio is owned by Maureen Rader, who is excited to share that Art Attack won Albuquerque Journal's Reader's Choice Award for Children's Entertainment this year.

"Art Attack offers different options for customers to fully unleash their creativity: ceramic painting, mosaic tiling and canvas painting," Rader says. "Many pieces have design work that you simply fill in with your favorite color, but you can also use any of our in-studio supplies including stamps, stencils, stickers and easy-to-use paint writer tips. Our mosaics are fun build-it-yourself puzzles."

For customers who are looking to paint their own ceramic masterpiece, the process is easy. Guests pick their own piece of pottery from the large selection of blank dishware, frames, animals, jewelry boxes, coin banks and more, paint it to fit their imagination and Art Attack does the rest.

Within two to five days, customers have their finished product. For mosaics, the process is similar. Guests pick their base from an array of shapes and sizes, glue their tiles together and take their finished product home that day. Canvas paintings are available in two sizes: 12 inches by 12 inches and 16 inches by 20 inches. Customers can paint whatever they like. They can also choose from more than 100 designs to trace.

Art Attack happily hosts parties for all ages, as well. They often host parties for children, office events, bridal showers, baby showers and more. Additionally, every first Friday of the month, they host a Ladies' Night, when girlfriends can relax and paint for two hours, with snacks and the chance to win prizes.

"You have all the fun and we do the clean-up," Rader says. "Birthday parties are a popular option for all ages; our creative assistants help kids through the entire process, including picking pieces and pouring paint colors. Our customers love getting creative with their friends and having a keepsake that will last a lifetime when the party is over."

Art Attack is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. On Sundays, guests can paint their masterpieces from noon until 6 p.m. Contact the studio to schedule a party.
