Albuquerque Photographers' Gallery: Local Art, Universal Beauty

By Jessica Metcalf

Located in Old Town, Albuquerque, the Albuquerque Photographers' Gallery is the only cooperative art gallery in New Mexico dedicated solely to exhibiting and promoting contemporary fine art photography by local artists. Founded in 2003 by photographer Marilyn Hunter, APG is operated as a co-op with between 8 & 10 members.

Amy M. Ditto, Social Media Director and member artist of APG, outlines the gallery's two goals: "To create a nurturing and challenging environment where local photographers can discuss their work and to provide a quality venue within which to promote, exhibit, and sell contemporary fine art photography."

The Southwest has always been a photographer's dream location: its stunning vistas, wide plains, dramatic light, and richness of culture make it the perfect place to capture iconic and breathtaking imagery. APG takes pride in showcasing the beauty and magnificence that is the Southwest and beyond, featuring images which range from classic to contemporary and encompassing a wide diversity of subject matter, both representational and conceptual.

Part of APG's goal is community outreach with the aim of inspiring interest in photographic art. To further that goal, the gallery recently sponsored an award for the,"Focus on Youth" juried student photography exhibit sponsored by the Albuquerque Museum and Albuquerque Public Schools Fine Arts Program. "The work that these young people are producing is outstanding and inspiring," says Ditto. The gallery also participates in community art events, hosts juried shows, and presents seminars for the public. Ditto explains why art is important to a community: "Whether it simply communicates or contributes to the beauty of our surroundings or teaches us something about our lives and communities, it is always culturally relevant and of profound importance."

The fact that APG is a juried cooperative sets it apart from other local galleries featuring photography. Each time you visit the gallery, you will meet a member artist. The gallery prides itself on this difference and in that the work within represents a full spectrum of contemporary photography: from stunning images of local scenery to contemporary work which blurs the lines between photography and other art genres. Whether you are an aficionado or an aspiring artist, there is ample opportunity to get inspired at the Albuquerque Photographers' Gallery in Old Town. Hours vary seasonally. Summer: 10:30am to 6:00pm; Winter: 11-5:30.
